Router NAT issues
Router NAT issues
Over the years we have discovered that some routers work better than others. In some cases to use any VoIP services we have had to make some minor changes to a customers router. The list below are the changes we have made to particular routers to ensure a stable and reliable VoIP connection.
Common
The most common issue we encounter with routers is when SIP ALG is enabled on the router. As a first step we always recommend turning SIP ALG off on your router.
Linksys WAG320N
- Upgrade the router to the latest firmware
- Configure the local SIP port on each phone to listen on a unique port. For instance most phones listen on port 5060. We found that by changing the port for extension 1001 to 5001, Extension 1002 to 5002 and Extension 1003 to 5003 all phones were able to register and receive calls.
Netgear DG834G
- Upgrade to the latest firmware from the Netgear website
- Disable SIP ALG and DOS Protection from the DG834 admin interface
- Select WAN Setup from the left navigation menu.
- Select Disable Port Scan and DOS Protection
- Select Disable SIP ALG
- Configure the local SIP port on each phone to listen on a unique port. For instance most phones listen on port 5060. We found that by changing the port for extension 1001 to 5001, Extension 1002 to 5002 and Extension 1003 to 5003 all phones were able to register and receive calls.
